X164 2006 - 2012 Designer : Steve Mattin , Gorden Wagener Mercedes-Benz's first full-size seven-seat SUV, built on an extended version of the W164 ML-Class platform. Combined three-row seating with genuine off-road capability. Engine options spanned V6, V8 and V12 units, with the AMG GL 63 producing 544 ps from its V8 biturbo. Steve Mattin and Gorden Wagener's commanding design set a new benchmark for full-size SUVs.

X166 06/2012 - 2019 Designer : Holger Huttler , Gorden Wagener Grew in size over its predecessor, expanding interior space and load capacity. A 2015 facelift brought a rename from GL to GLS, clarifying its positioning as the flagship SUV equivalent to the S-Class. The Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 was derived from this generation. Engine downsizing progressed with V6 and V8 options delivering improved fuel efficiency.

Achieved the seemingly contradictory goals of a lower roofline and greater interior space compared to its predecessor. AIRMATIC air suspension is standard across the range. The Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 produces 558 ps from its V8 biturbo, delivering the ultimate in mobile luxury. A PHEV variant is also offered.

X296 / Z296 04/2022 - Designer : Lukas Haag ,Slavche Tanevski The electric counterpart to the GLS and the third model on the EVA platform, following the EQS sedan and EQE. Unveiled on 19 April 2022, it is positioned as a full-size luxury electric crossover SUV. At 5,125 mm in length with a 3,210 mm wheelbase, it is marginally shorter than the GLS while retaining generous rear-seat space. Optional third-row seating accommodates up to seven passengers. The range comprises the EQS 450+ (265 kW, rear-wheel drive), EQS 450 4MATIC and EQS 580 4MATIC (400 kW combined). The 108.4 kWh battery delivers a WLTP range of up to 660 km in the EQS 450+. DC fast charging supports up to 200 kW. The optional MBUX Hyperscreen spans 56 inches (approximately 142 cm) of the dashboard with three integrated displays. The AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ produces 544 kW (761 hp) and 1,020 Nm via AMG-specific motors and cooling. Manufactured at the Mercedes-Benz U.S. International plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, alongside the GLE, GLS and EQE SUV.
